Who says gardening is just sitting and digging? Put your boots on and try these “Garden-Powered” games!
How to play:
Find a sunny spot on the pavement or patio in the morning.
Stand in the exact same spot and have a friend or parent trace your shadow with sidewalk chalk.
Come back at lunch and again in the afternoon. Stand in the same spot and trace your shadow again.
The Magic: Your shadow “walks” around you! This is because the Earth is spinning while the Sun stays still. You’ve turned yourself into a giant outdoor clock!
How to play:
Set up two “Flower Stations” (buckets or bowls) on opposite sides of the garden. Fill one with water (the “Nectar”).
Give the kids a small sponge or a spoon.
They have to soak up the “Nectar” and run to the other bucket to squeeze it out.
The Lesson: This is how hard bees work! They have to fly back and forth hundreds of times just to make one tiny bit of honey.
How to play:
Everyone has to sit perfectly still and close their eyes for 60 seconds.
You have to use your “Super Ears” to identify 3 different sounds.
Was it a bird chirping? A lawnmower? A bee buzzing? Or a neighbor’s gate creaking?
The first person to guess 3 sounds wins a “Nature Listener” badge!
How to play:
Dig up a big scoop of dirt and put it in a clear glass jar with some water.
Put the lid on tight and shake it like a Polaroid picture!
Leave it on a shelf for an hour.
The Result: The soil will settle into layers. The heavy stones go to the bottom, the sand is in the middle, and the “good stuff” (organic matter) floats on top. It’s like a science experiment in a jar!
