Weekly Gardening: Winter Maintenance & Bare-Root Planting
Welcome to our first January gardening update. While the ground may feel fast asleep during these frosty mornings, January is actually a critical month for structural garden work, tool preparation, and protecting our local biodiversity here in Cherrybrook.
🌱 This Week's Core Maintenance
- Wisteria & Rose Pruning: Cut back summer-flowering climbers like wisteria now while the plant is dormant. Trim side shoots back to 2 or 3 buds from the main framework to encourage massive blooms later this year. (See the pruning tools in our visual above!)
- Protect Pots from Frost: Heavy winter rain followed by a sharp frost can crack terracotta pots. Wrap vulnerable outdoor containers in bubble wrap or hessian, or temporarily move them closer to the shelter of the house walls.
- Stay Off Frozen Grass: Walking on a lawn covered in heavy frost or snow can break the frozen grass blades, leaving unsightly brown, dead patches that take months to recover in spring.
🪶 Supporting Cherrybrook Wildlife
Food is incredibly scarce for garden birds right now. Keep your feeders regularly topped up with high-energy foods like fat balls, sunflower hearts, and crushed peanuts. Remember to check your bird bath daily—if it's frozen solid, gently pour warm water over it to melt a drinking area for our local robins and thrushes.
🍎 Trees & Fruit Patches
January is the prime time to plant bare-root fruit trees, hedging, and soft fruit bushes (like raspberries and gooseberries). Bare-root plants are much cheaper than container-grown ones and establish incredibly strong root networks while the top of the plant is still completely dormant.
🎨 Kids Club: Planning the Dream Patch
Don't let the wet weather keep you from gardening! Grab some paper and crayons with the kids this week to map out a small patch for the upcoming spring. Deciding where the giant sunflowers, sweet peas, or strawberries will live keeps the excitement alive indoors.
