Welcome to our February gardening update. This month, we balance essential outdoor maintenance with the excitement of planning and starting new life indoors. February often brings early surprises, like the emerging bulbs in our visual above, reminding us that spring is just around the corner.
🌱 This Week's Core Tasks
- Start Hardy Veggies Indoors: Now is the time to sow seeds for hardy plants like tomatoes, peppers, and aubergines indoors on a bright windowsill or in a heated propagator. This head start is crucial for a productive summer.
- Prune Winter-Flowering Shrubs: If you have shrubs like Mahonia or winter flowering jasmine that have finished their display, prune them back this week to maintain shape and encourage next year's blooms.
- Clear and Prepare Beds: On a dry day, continue clearing any remaining autumn debris. Gently fork over the soil in empty vegetable or flower beds to improve drainage and aeration.
🌷 Caring for Early Bulbs
Look out for the first signs of snowdrops, crocuses, and narcissi (just like the yellow and purple crocuses pictured!). If they are emerging in grass, avoid mowing that area. If you find established clumps that are too crowded, you can carefully lift, divide, and replant them *'in the green'* (while leaves are still present) for better flowering next year.
🥔 Continued Spud Care
If you started chitting your potatoes last month (see our previous post), continue keeping them in a cool, bright, frost-free spot. They should be developing strong, green sprouts. If you haven't started yet, you can still begin chitting early or maincrop varieties now.
🎨 Kids Club: Micro-Garden on the Sill!
Use clean, shallow containers (like old yogurt pots) and sow seeds for cress, micro-herbs, or small salad leaves like mizuna. Kids love seeing how quickly these seeds sprout, and they can harvest and eat them in just a few weeks. It's a great introduction to the magic of growing!
